Alloy Heat Treatment install Dye-Penetrant Flaw Detection line

Dudley based Made in the Midlands Gold member Alloy Heat Treatment, specialists in alloy and aluminium heat treatment, have installed a Dye-Penetrant Flaw Detection line.

Dye penetrant inspection (DPI), also called liquid penetrate inspection (LPI) or penetrant testing (PT), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials. The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials, although for ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is often used instead for its subsurface detection capability. LPI is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components.

Following successful trials, the company is now able to offer this new process to all customers. This line will accept a maximum product size of: 500mm (h) x 800mm (w) x 800mm (d) and all operators have level 2 PCN in Non-Destructive Testing, whilst parts are certified under the companies ISO 9001:2008 accreditation.

The move follows a succession of new investments by the company, including a £500k investment in 'Oven 30' for the aerospace sector and the launch of a mobile heat treatment service.
